US Postal Service hiring across SC to meet surge in shipping demands

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) – The United States Postal Service is considered an essential federal service to the American people. Over the past few years, the impact of COVID-19 on shipping demands has set the company back and they need help now more than ever.

In March 2021, the USPS launched its 10-year plan, Deliver for America. This plan is focused on building a more stable workforce to better serve the community and its growing needs.

The United States Postal Service has been around for nearly 250 years, and officials say their service has been a staple of American society ever since.

Charleston Postmaster Stephan Slaughter says they’ve seen changes over the years as parcel volumes have increased dramatically. The company is working to adapt now to ensure customers receive their packages in a timely manner.

As part of the 10-year plan, Slaughter says they will invest in different aspects of the business. This ranges from their parcel fulfillment network to upgrading retail spaces and most importantly, investing in their people through planning, culture and career paths.

Slaughter rose through the ranks to become Charleston’s postmaster, but he started as a junior employee at the USPS. As hiring sessions begin, Slaughter encourages everyone to give them a shot.

“The Postal Service gave me a lot of opportunity, a lot of job security and then allowed me to progress to the point where I’m now the Postmaster of Charleston. So if I can do it, I encourage everyone to do it,” says Slaughter.

Starting today, post offices in Aiken-Summerall, Charleston, North Augusta and Bluffton are hosting job fairs. They are looking to fill immediate vacancies for multiple positions and starting salaries range from $18.92 to $19.50 per hour.

USPS officials will be present at job fairs to share job information and answer any questions.
