The researchers discovered which jobs were the hardest to leave, allowing the respective employers to set lower wages for the workers.
In a new study analyzing data from 16 million resumes, researchers from UCLA and MIT used two factors to find the types of jobs that make mobility difficult.
The first factor is employer concentration, that is, the number of different business options in specific areas where workers live. “If your employer controls a lot of local jobs…then you’ll get a phenomenon that’s sort of the equivalent of a monopoly in the labor market,” said study co-author Gregor Schubert and a UCLA Anderson School of Financial Management Professor.
Schubert and his team found that fewer local employment options resulted in less competitive wages.
“When you have few big employers and no other alternatives, you just have to accept the salary they offer and take what you can get. You can’t really negotiate,” did he declare.
The other factor was whether the skill set a person develops in their occupation is transferable to another type of job.
“For example, many people who work in the restaurant industry as waiters and waitresses may also become baristas or some other type of entry-level customer service job. And so, thinking about their job market and how much bargaining power we have, we should really think about the concentration of employers in all of these different professions,” Schubert said.
The report found that registered nurses have the hardest time moving from job to job.
“Nurses might be in local metro areas where there are very few hospitals. So there’s only one or two hospital systems, so they don’t really have a choice of employers,” Schubert said. .
“They’re very unlikely to change jobs when they lose their current job, and it’s kind of a mix of whether or not their skills could transfer between different jobs. On top of that, it there are licensing and administrative burdens to move into other nursing professions,” he added.
