Space Force offers bonuses up to $20,000 for new Guardians with technical backgrounds

The Space Force unveiled a wave of bonuses to attract recruits with highly specialized technological backgrounds to become Guardians.

Bonuses range from $12,000 to $20,000 for certain technology certifications that could be used for Space Force cyber career fields, according to a press release from the Department of the Air Force’s recruiting service.

Earlier this month, the Air Force Department unveiled more than a dozen bounties as a way to attract new recruits amid a nationwide labor shortage and pandemic economy.

But while the Air Force has said it faces headwinds to fill its ranks, the Space Force has no problem recruiting recruits from the small number of positions it has as interest continues. to grow for the newest branch of military service.

Maj. Gen. Ed Thomas, commander of the Air Force Recruiting Service, told that last year they had more than 42,000 leads on people interested in joining to fill just 500 positions.

“Space Force recruiting is on very solid ground right now,” Thomas said.

The Space Force is the smallest of the branches of the military service. It has grown to 8,400 Guardians since its creation at the request of former President Donald Trump in 2019 and is expected to increase by 200 new recruits in 2023.

For Space Force Guardians who have already joined the ranks, the Air Force Department also offers re-enlistment bonuses for a dozen careers, such as cyber intelligence analysts and communications specialists, to retain their knowledge. and specialized skills.

Unlike other services, the Space Force does not have a reserve or national guard component; Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall floats a proposal that the Guardians be part-time or full-time instead.

General John Raymond, Chief of Space Operations, has spoken publicly about the full-time and part-time concept as a possible way to recruit talent from the private sector to fill the highly specialized roles within the ranks of the Space Force.

“We would give people the option to go into commercial industry, go to NASA, and then come back,” Raymond told Space News earlier this month. “Maybe at certain times in their lives, if they want to have kids, they can go part-time for a while and then come back without having to leave active duty and then go into reserve.”

Space Force will make history next month when 72 men and women begin the first Guardians-only training camp at Joint Base San Antonio, Texas.
