Rye Police Sgt. Bill Blais is the new Lieutenant of the Newfields NH Police Department

NEWFIELDS — Police officer Bill Blais doesn’t need to think too long when asked what the difference is between Rye, the town where he worked for 20 years, and his new duty in Newfields.

“It’s two small towns, two close-knit communities,” he said, adding, “But Newfields doesn’t have a beach!”

Blais recently became Newfields’ last sworn officer, taking the post of open lieutenant. He said he looks forward to his new role after spending most of his career at Rye.

Blais was born in Methuen, Massachusetts, but his family moved to Seabrook Beach when he was a child and he grew up by the water. Although his family did not have a tradition of law enforcement, he interacted with police officers during his childhood on the beach and when he went to work at Eastman’s Pier when he was 12 years old.

“I had immense respect for them, and my interest grew,” he recalls, relaxing at his new office in Newfields.
