Publication Director – HQ Non-Fiction – London

Develop long-term, profitable publishing plans to produce an unparalleled slate of non-fiction titles, encompassing backlist management and new title development in line with the division’s overall publishing strategy. In particular, the incumbent should have experience in commercial publishing as well as managing four color and narrative titles.

The role is one of the division’s key roles and through exceptionally close contact with the market and key influencers, the role holder will be responsible for managing our current roster and brands and developing and promoting new talent and new brands in a cost-effective way.

A detailed understanding of how to develop successful titles will be combined with a clear and informed vision of how best to market, promote and sell these products and content. The incumbent will also be responsible for managing and developing the internal team and will play a leadership role.

Main responsibilities

  • Plan, champion and execute a profitable, market-driven publishing strategy for the HQ Non-Fiction team

    • Develop titles suitable for the UK commercial and non-commercial, international market as well as co-publishing and rights. Focus on all formats and titles with backlist potential

    • Ensure titles are delivered in an appropriate and timely manner with all costs controlled and within budget

    • Identify market trends and publishing opportunities through close contact with the market, agents, content creators and key influencers

    • Propose a viable, creative, innovative, commercially efficient edition that strongly contributes to the Division’s growth objectives.

    • Review, develop, maintain and deliver cost-effective publishing plans in accordance with divisional objectives. Include creating and maintaining release schedules, responding to changing market needs as appropriate.

    • Lead the creative process and go-live with potential roster development.

  • Liaison between sister companies within HarperCollins and News UK

  • Facilitate communication within the division and champion non-fiction titles business from corporate headquarters throughout the company and with affiliates

  • Develop long-term relationships with authors and agents to secure future deals for HarperCollins in preference to competitors

  • Promote excellent author care

  • Manage and develop relationships with agents, talent managers and partners

  • Contribute fully to sales and marketing plans

    • Ensure strong and effective involvement of Sales and Marketing teams in product development

    • Effectively influence sales and marketing plans through in-depth market knowledge.

    • Work with sales and marketing teams to ensure plans are implemented

  • Contribute to the overall strategy and management of the HQ Non-Fiction activity

  • Contribute to the forecasting and budgeting process

  • Join the Division Leadership Team

  • Work with Production and Ad Ops to ensure titles are executed on the critical path and to maintain the release schedule for all titles

  • Analyze, evaluate and implement systems and processes to help improve the business

  • Work closely with the senior team to maximize all opportunities offered by global rights, including Rights, Audio and Harper 360.

  • Ensure titles have coordinated digital strategies and that priority titles are featured for promotions and metadata is optimized. Innovate where possible
