Nokia Selects Ottawa, ON Technology Cluster to Build Sustainable, Leading ICT and Cybersecurity R&D Center

OTTAWA (ON), October 17, 2022 /CNW/ – Nokia Canada and federal, provincial and municipal partners today announced plans to transform nokiait is Ottawa (ON), installation in a leading sustainable research and development (R&D) center. The technology center will expand considerably Nokia Canada capacity in next-generation information and communications technology (ICT) and cybersecurity innovation. Nokia Canada plans to begin construction of the site in 2023 and plans to open the new facility in 2026. This project will transform Nokia Canada 26-acre campus at Kanata North Business Park into a sustainable, accessible and mixed center of businesses, homes and shops where nearly 2,160 local employees, Ottawa residents and businesses, and Canada’s entire technology ecosystem can collaborate, innovate and drive well-being and prosperity in Canada and around the world.

The new R&D center will help secure Canada’s position as a global leader in the green digital future by expanding Nokia Canada expertise in 5G, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, accelerating cloud software growth and improving digital identity management and security for connected devices to critical networks.

Nokia Canada Connectivity solutions provide the essential foundation for major Canadian industries and infrastructure, including transportation, utilities, smart cities, government services and natural resources. Nokia Canada is also the primary supplier to Canada’s major telecom operators, including 5G radio and core, fiber to the home, IP routing, optical networks, cybersecurity, submarine cables and management software network.

New Ottawa installation will support nokiathe global target of 50% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 by implementing sustainable technologies, including water-side heat recovery, air-side heat and energy recovery, cooling natural water side and the recovery of rainwater.

The transformed campus should allow Nokia Canada grow his Ontariofrom more than 340 positions to 2,500, of which 2,160 will be based in Ottawaincreasing the number of co-op and intern positions for university and college students in STEM fields from 100 to 400 and introducing new state-of-the-art lab space and equipment. Nokia Canada plans to invest over CAD 340 million in laboratories and equipment, manpower and operating costs between 2023 and 2027.

The Government of Canada is finalizing plans to provide up to CAD 40 million through his Strategic Innovation Fund (SIF) and the Government of Ontariothrough Invest Ontario, will provide CAD 30 million to the project.
