My position has changed over time, but my visa bears the old title. Does it affect me?

According to Haider Hussain, a partner at Fragomen, an international immigration firm, having a job title on your visa that is different from your current profile can cause problems while traveling in the GCC. Even if you are traveling abroad for a work trip, business visa applications may encounter obstacles due to the gap.

“Business visa applications and travel to the GCC and other countries may be considered more than usual, as the job title given [on the visa] is lower,” Hussain said.

He added that at times, individuals may also encounter problems when applying for a bank loan.

“A lower job title with a higher salary may cause authorities to question the role of the individual…thereby reviewing the application more than usual and requesting additional information. Also, credit may not be easily given from a practical perspective because the job title is lower,” he added.

How can I change my job title?

Although this issue can be problematic, it is relatively easy to request an update to your visa details.

“The process of changing title depends on whether the employee works in a metropolitan company or in a free zone. For a mainland company, changing the job title requires the employee’s records to be changed with the MOHRE, followed by changing the visa sticker with the immigration authority. In the case of free zones, the process is simpler and involves changing the visa sticker through the respective free zone authority,” Hussain said.

Sometimes, however, you may need to meet certain MOHRE requirements, according to Dipesh Rathod, head of account management at Decisive Zone, a business start-up consultancy.

“The job title on the UAE residency visa is based on the quota availability of the company sponsoring the employee visa. This can be changed if the employee has the relevant attested degree,” Rathod said.

However, the requirement for attested education certificates comes from MOHRE, Rathod said, and the visa update — which is handled by immigration authorities — can happen after MOHRE records change. Thus, the onus is on the individual to provide the update to their employer, who will then follow up.

Rathod thinks the visa designation doesn’t really affect travel or loans, but would look at the actual employment contract, salary, and benefits.

“From an immigration point of view, [authorities] only verify a valid employee visa, regardless of the designation on the visa,” he added.

However, it is always a good idea to have your visa updated after checking with your company’s human resources and personnel department.
