More workers are ‘actively disengaged’ at work: survey

Do you feel apathetic at work? You’re not alone, according to a new survey that finds more people are disengaged from their jobs since the pandemic began.

Gallup’s annual survey found that only 32% of full-time and part-time employees said they were engaged in their work, while 18% were actively disengaged.

Gallup’s Engagement Survey uses quarterly surveys of approximately 15,000 random full-time and part-time employees. The survey measures factors such as clarity of employee expectations, opportunities for development, and remote versus onsite work.

What the research says

  • Employee engagement fell from 36% in 2020 to 34% in 2021, marking the first annual decline in a decade. This figure has fallen further in 2022, to 32%.
  • Women and workers under 35 were particularly likely to report less engagement at work, particularly due to factors such as ‘feeling supported’ at work and ‘having someone who cares about their development “.
  • Companies hoping to bring back corporate culture with a return to work in the office have done the opposite, according to Gallup. The biggest drop in employee engagement was seen among those who work onsite but can do their job successfully remotely.
  • Fully remote employees also saw a noticeable increase in feeling unengaged in their workplace.

  • Gallup says having great managers is more important than ever and recommends leaders have at least one meaningful conversation a week with every employee, discussing employee goals, customers and well-being.
  • Hybrid working can be beneficial for both employees and employers, according to Gallup. Companies are less likely to retain and attract star talent without being flexible and finding the right mix of onsite and remote work.
