SOUTH BEND, Ind., — Amid nationwide labor shortages, ride-sharing app Lyft hopes to clear barriers for people trying to find jobs, bringing them at work. Lyft offers free rides for job interviews in South Bend and free rides for the first few weeks on the job.
The South Bend Regional Chamber of Commerce told ABC57 it hopes this can be a step to help break down barriers for people and for businesses to attract more people specifically to fill these entry-level positions. ‘hall.
“You know there are a lot of high demand but low wage jobs out there and how we make sure people have access to that transportation and stuff that will break down the barriers to getting to work,” Kate Lee said. , executive director of education and workforce with the Chamber.
Lyft’s National Jobs Program offers free ride-sharing services to help South Bend-area residents get to job interviews, training, and even their first few weeks on the job. they are hired.
A tool that Lee thinks employers could leverage to really help fill those vacancies.

In Indiana, the most recent statewide unemployment rate was 2.2%, with a similar number in St. Joseph County.
Even with those low numbers, Lee said employers were still struggling to get people in.
“In every industry there are challenges in filling jobs, you can see it when you walk into a restaurant, everywhere you go. And then we hear it from our employers, our chamber members.”
She thinks free programs to help remove major barriers like transportation are just one step to help address Michiana’s labor shortage.
“Any program that reduces barriers such as transportation, buying a uniform, child care is another huge barrier for many people trying to go to work. Any programs we can put in place that reduce this barrier and allow people to move into a position that allows them financial stability.
Lyft’s Job Path program only serves select cities, including South Bend here in Michiana.
It is similar to South Bend’s Commuters Trust program which also offers discounted rides through several organizations.
