Liz King has offered to replace Dr. Mercatante as the county’s public health officer

A contract to fill one of two chief health officer positions allocated earlier this year by St. Clair County commissioners will be presented to council next Thursday — and the candidate may be a familiar face.

Liz King, a registered nurse, is currently the director of nursing and community health for the health department.

According to a memo to the Board of Commissioners from County Administrator Karry Hepting, King was selected as one of the top candidates for the position of public health officer by an interview committee, and her appointment was approved by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.

The move is part of a months-long process after the county council voted to advertise vacancies for the position, as well as that of the medical director – who are currently held in a combined capacity by Dr Annette Mercatante until the end of his contract. next month. The split in the posts came following debate over how a controversial order for COVID-19 masks was issued in January.
