Kohl’s and Macy’s are hiring a total of 130,000 seasonal workers to help them handle the boom in business expected for the holiday season.

In addition to earning a little extra cash for the holidays, you can take advantage of employee discounts offered by both retailers. So you can save on your own holiday shopping.

Kohl’s employs 90,000 part-time and full-time associates.

Meanwhile, Macy’s plans to hire more than 40,000 full-time and part-time seasonal positions.

For department stores, this is the most important time of the year. They have a lot to do during the holidays, when these stores are busiest and bring in the most money.

And even as inflation threatens to dampen holiday shopping, a tight labor market means retailers are still scrambling to fill vacancies.

Here’s what we know:

Kohls

Kohl’s is looking to hire hordes of seasonal workers for its 1,100 department stores, distribution centers and e-commerce fulfillment centers.

Storage, retail and fulfillment associates are the top three store jobs, according to seasonal job listings. These positions require basic math and technology skills, legible handwriting, and the ability to carry 50 pounds. Otherwise, they’re entry-level, although some customer service experience is preferable.

Distribution jobs include warehouse and loss prevention associates. As a warehouse worker, you will need the same basic qualifications as store positions, but the work is more physically demanding. Loss prevention jobs require a high school diploma or GED.

Kohl’s does not have a company-wide minimum wage or share salary information in its job applications. According to Indeed’s National Wage Estimates, seasonal pay is around $12 an hour. All seasonal workers are paid weekly and receive a 15% discount. If you work 30 hours a week or more, you are also eligible for health insurance.

Although Kohl’s has already held its national hiring events for the season, many seasonal concerts are available outside of the event. Apply here.

Macy’s

The largest U.S. department store chain by sales, Macy’s is hiring about 41,000 full-time and part-time seasonal worker positions at its Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s stores, supply chain warehouses and call centers.

That’s slightly less than the 48,000 seasonal workers Macy’s hired last year.

Like Kohl’s, Macy’s does not share official salary information for its seasonal jobs. But judging by the job postings on Indeed, the seasonal wage seems to be between $15 and $18 an hour.

Macy’s employees are paid weekly, but can also get instant access to up to 50% of their daily pay, the company says. Employees also get a 20% discount in store.

To help bring workers into this tight job market, Macy’s is touting the ability for seasonal workers to transition into permanent jobs. In 2021, according to Macy’s, more than 10,000 vacationers stayed with the company and landed permanent gigs.
