These could put a nice amount of money in your pocket.

Key points

  • Parallel unrest could make it easier to manage the rising cost of living.
  • There may be work opportunities available in your children’s school district, such as being a substitute teacher, lunch aide, or school crossing guard.

If you’re thinking about having a side hustle, now’s a good time to consider one. These days, the cost of living is skyrocketing due to inflation and gasoline prices are skyrocketing due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Even if you don’t have trouble paying your bills, you may have financial goals that a side business could help you achieve. These can include paying off your credit cards once and for all or setting aside money to eventually send your kids to college.

But if you have children, finding a part-time job can be difficult. The cost of childcare can be astronomical, to the point that it wipes out so much of your paycheck that it’s not worth working for in the first place.

The good news, however, is that there may be a hustle opportunity for you at your kids’ school or through their school district. Here are some part-time gigs that could put a good amount of money in your pocket and allow you to work without having to worry about childcare.

1. Substitute teacher

Typically, to work as a substitute teacher, you’ll need to go through a background check, but you won’t need specific education experience. Instead, you’ll be given a lesson plan to follow, and your main task will be to make sure the kids in your class stay put and don’t get into trouble.

The downside of being a substitute teacher is that the work may not be stable or predictable. After all, you will only be called to work when a teacher is absent.

But don’t forget that once you’ve signed up as an approved substitute, you’ll usually be able to take the place of any teacher at your school who came out, whether it’s the person who teaches gym or the 7th grade math teacher. So, over time, your workload might increase and your income might pile up.

2. Help with lunch

In many schools, it is not the teachers themselves who supervise meal times, but rather outside help. It’s because teachers need a lunch break themselves so often that schools bring in people to watch the lunchroom for a few hours a day. And if you’re willing to commit to a schedule, you could be one of those people.

The advantage of being a lunch aide is that your hours should be stable and predictable. At the same time, you should still have most of your day free.

3. Brigadier

Many school districts employ crossing guards to help children navigate busy intersections safely. If you’re willing to brave the elements, you could earn some decent money as a morning scout, afternoon scout, or both.

The advantage of this gig is that the work is regular and you usually don’t work long hours. That gives you plenty of time to run errands, cook dinner, and do the many other tasks that you’re no doubt trying to cram into your day.

Of course, the downside is that you can’t just give up your job when it’s raining or it’s 97 degrees outside. But if you think you can handle this kind of gig, it’s a great way to get some fresh air and earn some cash.

Getting a side gig isn’t always easy with kids, especially if they’re too young to be left home unsupervised. But if you’re keen to earn some extra money, it’s worth seeing if these specific jobs are available in your local school district.
