Facing ‘almost unsustainable’ police shortage, Norwalk hires veteran cops to avoid months of training

NORWALK — City police department leaders are hoping a group of newly hired officers with previous law enforcement experience will help ease staffing issues facing the force.

Earlier this month, three new officers were sworn in at City Hall. But unlike most new recruits, they joined the force without spending months in the police academy, providing an immediate boost to a department effectively short of 20 cops.

“This will take some of the burden off our short-term staffing issues,” Police Chief Thomas Kulhawik said.
