Don died Wednesday, December 21, 2022 at Avera Marshall Regional Medical Center.
Don was born April 18, 1936 in Chandler to Frank August Ferdinand Sanow and Fanna Christina Gesia (Aljet) Sanow.
Don grew up with 13 siblings (7 brothers and 6 sisters). Frank and Fanna moved their family from Chandler to Garvin when Don was 5 years old.
Don attended school in District 52, between Garvin and Balaton until 8th grade. He then worked on the family farm. Don left home at age 15 and worked full-time on the fur (mink) farm and part-time on the family farm.
Don met Janyce Marie Blanchard when she was 17. More than likely when he was cruising around in his beloved ’39 Ford. There are many stories about when they first met, but a few years earlier, Don fell head over heels in love with Janyce at first sight. Janyce was on a bridge in Garvin fishing with his parents and when he saw her he was punched. They didn’t meet that day but fate brought them together again! Don dated Janyce for two years before buying her a ring. They married on February 2, 1957, three years after they first met.
They made their first home in Lynd and later moved to a farm between Ghent and Marshall. Eventually, they moved to Minneota with their three children (1 boy and 2 girls). Their fourth child (boy) was born in 1966. While living in Minneota, Don ran the Minneota fur farm and worked in carpentry. Eventually, he started his own carpentry and DIY business until his retirement. Don also served in the Army National Guard for 9½ years. He cooked for the troops in his youth and for many of us for most of his life.
Don adored his family, he loved taking them camping, fishing and long walks in the countryside – all the while singing songs along the way. He enjoyed making homemade ice cream and decorating for parties. He loved to travel, see and experience new things with Janyce. They also traveled with their eldest son Duane and his family, and occasionally with his daughter Brenda and her family. Later his travels were reduced to adventures closer to home, but he still loved everything.
After retirement, Don’s hobbies were crafts and woodworking. He really loved all of his creative projects.
Don was a man with many stories. Sometimes they were true and sometimes not. He was full of bulls, nonsense and could talk to almost anyone. He will always be remembered for his generosity in all things. He gave freely to his family and friends whenever he could.
We will miss you Don Sanow! Your stories and your bull will be repeated through generations of your family. You will not be forgotten.
Don is survived by his wife Janyce Marie Sanow; daughters Cynthia (Carrie) Dorrance, Brenda VanNoStrand; daughter-in-law Jan Sanow; brother Vernon Sanow; 7 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his sons Duane Richard Sanow, Ray Erwin Sanow; grandsons Joshua and Jacob; parents Frank and Fanna Sanow; 8 brothers and 6 sisters.
