The 2022 application period for an eligible general manager seat on the Fairfield Glade Community Club Board of Directors will begin on Monday, May 9 and end at noon on Friday, June 3.
Unlike some of our annual Community Club elections, one thing is certain: there will be a new face at the table when current General Manager Jeani Miller steps down in September.
The question is, “Do you have what it takes to take on a leadership role at the table?”
Even if you understand the duties and responsibilities of the board and its members, do you know the obligations of a director beyond the proverbial activities of the boardroom?
The Elections Committee decided to “pull back the curtain” and find out some of the impacts and commitments of board service by talking to our two new directors, Greg Jones and John Wedgworth.
Both men were elected in the fall of 2020 and are currently serving their first terms on the board.
The biggest impact the two men emphasized is the time it takes to be an informed and active administrator.
The sheer volume of electronic “handouts” distributed to directors prior to each monthly workshop and subsequent board meeting can be daunting.
Greg estimated that each pre-meeting package is at least 160 electronic “pages” and often contains double that amount of background and supporting information. Documentation; much of the package information comes in the form of financial data.
Thorough review is necessary to participate effectively and well-informed in the monthly discussions.
Greg estimated that he spends at least four to six hours reviewing the information packet before the meeting.
Preparation time, combined with physical workshops/meetings, can easily exceed 20 hours per month – and this figure does not include the months when the board meets to hear pending calls from owners.
John agrees, adding that he spends 10 to 20 extra hours each month serving as a liaison with three community club committees.
Add that to the time spent on board activities to foster and enhance relationships with local and state governments, community partners, and other public and private entities, and it looks like so much more than a part-time job. .
The two men commented on the time spent each week handling email correspondence, text messages and phone calls from residents.
Special projects, such as the Druid Hills pre-planning team, also add to a director’s workload.
Both men noted that the support of their spouse is essential when board duties interfere with personal schedules and family responsibilities.
So, a word of warning: time is an important consideration for anyone considering applying for the position of general administrator.
But it’s not all bad news. Both men were quick to point out the personal rewards they’ve achieved as a director.
John noted that interacting with other board members, committee members and community club staff has been particularly informative and rewarding for him.
He forged many new friendships and personal relationships.
Greg agreed, noting that he appreciated the opportunity to contribute to his community and help guide the club as it continues to grow and develop.
Both men highlighted the valuable working relationships the council has developed with local government entities and their interest in pursuing mutually beneficial projects and efforts.
Unfortunately, due to the challenges of the coronavirus, many community gatherings normally associated with board responsibilities have been severely limited.
Both men look forward to the prospect of meeting and interacting with new residents when the club’s newcomer receptions resume.
Asked to give advice to future candidates, the two men pointed out that this is not a job for the faint of heart.
As with any community leadership role, there are both critics and supporters of the decisions the council must make. They warned that you can’t please everyone; distinctions are rare; and criticism cannot be taken personally.
Greg emphasized the value of serving on a community club committee, speculating that his assimilation into board business might have been easier with previous committee experience.

The Elections Committee is hosting a forum on Monday, May 16 to offer potential candidates the opportunity to have a 10-minute personal session with Greg and/or John to discuss their individual Board service questions. The event will start at 6 p.m. and each participant will have a designated discussion time.
