CIO’s role has ‘dramatically changed’ in past 24 months, says Lenovo

According to a new report, nine out of 10 Chief Information Officers (CIOs) in the UK believe their job goes beyond technology.

Lenovo’s Global CIO Study shed light on the role and its growing list of responsibilities and influence within the C-Suite, and how it affects the profession.

Globally, nine in ten, the same number as UK CIOs, said their role and responsibilities have extended beyond technology and into non-traditional areas including data analysis, business relationships, sustainability and talent acquisition. In the UK, work now increasingly includes digital transformation and business process automation, according to the report.

Along with the expansion, global CIOs also suggested that work has become more difficult over the past two years with the increasing use of AI and automation in the workplace. Much of this is aimed at talent acquisition and hybrid work models, survey respondents said.

However, the biggest challenge facing CIOs, according to the report, was related to data privacy, which 66% of respondents said was a growing issue. This, they said, was equal to cybersecurity and ransomware threats (also 66%), but more concerning than technological change (65%), the management of fragmented IT vendor ecosystems (61%) and also the adoption of newer technologies (60%).

“Modern CIOs are the ‘mission control’ for their organizations, their role has transformed dramatically in the past 24 months alone,” said Ken Wong, president of Lenovo Solutions and Services Group. “From navigating complex technology ecosystems to keeping up with the speed of digital transformation, to developing employees and managing a global shortage of IT talent, today’s CIO is responsible for the entire of the technology value chain and beyond.”

With increased responsibilities, more than three in four CIOs believe their overall influence and impact within their organization has also increased. Overall, 88% agreed their role was the “most critical part” of their business or organisation, with 84% suggesting the same in the UK.
