Balance Is Key: Students Become Aware of Maintaining Demanding Schedules | Culture & Leisure

Balancing school, work, and a social life can be difficult for college students. With classes already taking up a lot of time in students’ schedules, it can be difficult to find a way to have one job, or several, while being careful not to be too spread out with a busy schedule.

Junior Carmella Famolaro works four jobs while juggling classes for her major in human physiology.

Famolaro works as the assistant resident director on Coughlin Block for Gonzaga University Housing, a lifeguard at Rudolf Fitness Center, and a teaching assistant for GU’s anatomy lab while also working at Wild Walls Climbing Gym.

“I’m really spread out right now, especially since human physiology is such a demanding subject,” Famolaro said. “I have a hard time balancing, but I’m generally quite productive throughout my day.”

With his busy schedule, Famolaro makes sure to find time to do his homework and have some free time outside of school.

“I try to keep my evenings free [because] it’s my time for homework, and I also like to climb a lot during the week, so it’s my time to go relax and exercise,” Famolaro said.

Although dispersing yourself in certain jobs and activities can be a lot of work, it also has many advantages.

“Because I’m involved in so many things, I know a lot of people and make a lot of friends that way, so I would say that’s probably the most rewarding part,” Famolaro said. “[As well as] to be able to dive into so many different parts of Gonzaga’s life and Spokane’s life.”

Similar to Famolaro, senior Kiah Remillard also works multiple jobs while attending GU as a kinesiology major.

“I work in the library part-time on campus and off campus I work as a waiter at the Melting Pot,” Rémillard said. “At the library [I work] about six hours a week, and I do between 15 and 20 hours at the Melting Pot.

Although these two jobs take a lot of hours per week, Rémillard is also registered for 16 credits this semester, which is equivalent to about five courses.

“It’s a lot of trying to do homework in the library, which they can be quite demanding to do homework there,” Remillard said. “So finding the balance between doing my homework that I have to do in the library and then also doing my homework; I found the balance between being able to go to school, have a job and find time for the people I want to spend time with.

Senior Kate Swyers is also finding ways to balance her busy workload of majoring in biology with a concentration in research. Swyers is a teaching assistant for GU’s biology department and does research in an on-campus biology lab for Professor Betsy Bancroft while also working at Polka Dot Pottery.

With its various courses, jobs, and research, Swyers finds ways to balance all three throughout the week.

“Most days I get up at 7:45 or 8 a.m. and then go to class,” Swyers said. [how to schedule]. It’s kind of like filler hours, so I’ll jump into the lab for an hour if I have time.

Swyers said she likes being busy and it helps her get on with her days.

“In high school I played sports and had a part-time job, so I’m very used to it,” Swyers said. “I like to have my days filled with things to do because if I just sit there and have nothing to do, I’m just going to take a nap, so it’s always nice to be busy.”

Swyers said while being constantly busy can be taxing at times, there’s also a big payoff to it.

“Being able to come out of college prepared beyond what [professors] can teach you in a classroom; so, a lot more practical stuff,” Swyers said. “Plus having a job is nice for time management, learning how to manage your money, like so many things that are going to take you a lot further.
