ALL special programs next week | News, Sports, Jobs

ALPENA — In addition to its regular weekly programming, the Alpena Community College Lifelong Learners Association has several special programs scheduled for next week.

Many programs are offered via Zoom and in person. For the Zoom link to any of the programs, email all@alpenacc.edu. These programs are open to the public. Donations are accepted and appreciated.

The ship that time forgot

At 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, join ALL in person and via Zoom at the Mr. Briggs Center for The Ship That Time Forgot.

In May 1953, the freighter Henry Steinbrenner sank in a storm on Lake Superior with the loss of 17 sailors. However, her story was largely ignored after the first headlines immediately following her sinking. Come learn about her loss and the dramatic rescue of 16 of her crew and remember a veteran lake boat that was forgotten by history.

As a local history teacher and part-time sailor on the Great Lakes, Jeff Thomas draws on these two experiences to tell the story of Great Lakes shipwrecks. He finds the small details that bring stories to life in a storytelling experience that puts the viewer “in the moment” of these dramatic narratives.

Participants will walk about a mile through the woods, then switch to adjacent trails in the Crystal Point area of thePresque Isle Harbor Association to view Dwarf Iris Lake.

The group will then proceed to the Birch Hill Store for lunch. Buy a lunch or bring a lunch bag. Birch Hill can serve you when you arrive or order at birchhillgrocery.com or call 989-595-0595. In case of rain, this hike will be postponed to Saturday, May 14. Kinney expects a three-mile hike with lower cost options.
