4 Security Trends Hybrid Workplaces Should Consider Adopting

GUEST NOTE: As more companies move towards hybrid working models, navigating security becomes trickier. People have become accustomed to physical security measures in the workplace, but how can operators implement them when employees are working in different locations and remotely?

Here are four security trends that companies with hybrid work models should consider using to keep their businesses and employees safe.

Remote building management

In a hybrid work model, supervisors and managers won’t be in the office every day. However, they still need to be able to monitor building occupancy and those requesting access wherever they are to keep their office and employees safe.

A card reader door lock integrated with cloud-based access control is a great way to solve the problem, as managers will be able to see building entry activity in real time. Additionally, having a smart office management system in place allows employees to book a desk and will help managers know which team members need to be on site at specific times and dates.

The integration of these systems should make building management much easier and give managers and administrators the power to deny someone access or unlock doors if a fob entrance is not working – without having to be on the property daily.

Scaling up satellite offices

A satellite office simply refers to any workspace used by your employees that is different from the main office. For example, employees working remotely can be considered satellite offices or establish a smaller base in a different location to grow your business.

This has become increasingly popular since the pandemic, with companies opening smaller offices in different cities and employing staff from other countries. However, to scale your satellite offices successfully and efficiently, the right work and security tools need to be in place.

For example, ensure that all staff need access to reliable and secure Wi-Fi connections, a computer system and instant business messaging services such as Slack, Zoom or Google for calls and projects collaborative. These measures ensure that even when a team is not meeting in person, there can be a sense of community and everyone can stay in touch easily without compromising business security.

Visitor management

Access control can help managers and administrators track employee visits, but the uses go beyond authorized personnel. This tool can also be great for tracking deliveries or guests in the building.

Employees will likely have personalized key fobs or contactless access tools, but visitors will not. Instead, using an intercom system that directly alerts the management team that someone is requesting entry to the building is a great way to know who is accessing the property. With a cloud-based or mobile alert system, operators can ensure that visitors can easily enter the property – or deny access to unauthorized persons – no matter where the team is.

Converge physical security and cybersecurity

With the adoption of a hybrid working model, organizations must also redefine their security strategy to mitigate the growing risks of cyber and physical security breaches. The convergence of a company’s physical security and cybersecurity strategies will help ensure more robust overall security.

There are a multitude of ways to converge physical security and cybersecurity, including:

  • Cloud-based access control: Integrating your physical access control with cybersecurity in the cloud creates a detailed data log for all incoming and network activity.
  • Merge the physical security and cybersecurity teams: This will help each side of the company’s security more effectively identify vulnerabilities or issues, and work effectively together to design a solution.
  • Implement multi-factor authentication for cyber data and virtual workspaces to ensure that only authorized remote workers can access sensitive information.

Summary

Although physical security and cybersecurity were once treated as two different silos in the workplace, it is no longer the best way to ensure a safe and secure work environment. Hybrid work models require a balance between employee satisfaction and business security, and deploying the correct and effective physical cybersecurity measures can help achieve this goal.
